How to rip a personal DVD and put it to other mobile portable players?

You have a portable player and would like to watch your favorite home video DVDs using it? For instance, you have got an Archos DVR but you do not know how to convert your files into Archos DVR compatible format? AVS Video Tools is just the program you need to solve this problem now. This simple yet powerful video converter utility enables you to transfer your home video DVD library to Archos DVR (AVI/WMV) format with a few mouse clicks.

What you need:

All you need to transfer your DVD video and video files to your Archos DVR is:

• AVS Video Tools
• Archos DVR capable of video playback
• USB-cable to connect your Archos DVR to your personal computer

Download and install AVS Video Tools.

Click here to download it. After the download is finished, run the AVSVideoTools.exe file and follow the installation wizard instructions.

Run AVS Video Converter and select your input video file.

To select a video you would like to convert hit the Browse... button next to Input File Name Field. In the opened Windows Explorer Window browse for the necessary DVD folder:

NOTE! When your input is a DVD Disc, you will need to select the path to your source file: X://Video_TS/Video_TS.IFO. "X" stands for your DVD-ROM or the hard disk drive folder where your DVD is stored:

It is important to select the IFO file, rather than VOB file, because the IFO file contains the information about the entire DVD structure and this way you will avoid audio and video de-synch problems when converting.
Also, most DVDs have several VOB files (files with actual video)and if you convert VOBs instead of IFO, you will have to merge them afterwards, which is not the case with the IFO files.

Set up the conversion parameters.

After you have selected the video input file, press To AVI or To WMV button on the main panel. In the list of Profiles (WMV Profile Field) select one of the offered Archos DVR profiles. You can also click Edit Profile button to manually set the Archos DVR profile parameters.

For novice users it is recommended to select one of the default Archos DVR profiles.

If you would like to change the video file parameters you can open the Profile Editor and input the following information:

1. For the Archos on-screen playback :
   • Name: Archos AV500/700 video - DVR screen playback
   • Description: Video: 480x272; Audio: 128 kbps, 44 kHz, stereo
   • Comment: (optional)
   • Video Format: Windows Media Video 9
   • Frame size: 480x272
   • Width: 480
   • Height: 272
   • Audio Codec: Windows Media Audio 9
   • Audio Format: 128 kbps, 44 kHz, stereo CBR
   
   
2. For the TV output playback :
   • Name: Archos AV500/700 video - TV screen playback
   • Description: Video: 320x240; Audio: 128 kbps, 44 kHz, stereo
   • Comment: (optional)
   • Video Format: Windows Media Video 9
   • Frame size: 320x240
   • Width: 320
   • Height: 240
   • Audio Codec: Windows Media Audio 9
   • Audio Format: 128 kbps, 44 kHz, stereo CBR

Set up a proper video output file path.

Click the Browse... button next to Output File Name field and select a location on your HDD for the output video file.

NOTE! When you select a location for your output video file, you should save the file to your personal computer HDD.

You should remember the location you choose for your output file as you will need it later to upload your resulting video to your Archos DVR.

Convert your DVD files.

After you have set up all the conversion parameters, hit the Convert Now! button to start converting.

You can visually judge the DVD conversion process if you hit the Advanced>> button twice.

The result of the conversion should be a video file with .wmv extension that can be transferred to your Archos DVR with the help of a USB-cable.

Transfer the converted video file to Archos DVR.

Connect your Archos DVR to your computer with the help of a USB-cable. Turn on the Archos DVR.

Open the windows explorer and select the Archos DVR that will be represented as a new drive. Copy your created video from the location selected at Step 4 to the Archos HDD.

Now you can enjoy your favorite DVD video and video files on your Archos DVR!
